Case Study: Transforming a Raw Space into a High-Performance 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos Home Cinema in Sector 37, Chandigarh

Engineering Excellence Beyond Hardware: AV Consultants’ 17+ Years of Home Cinema Expertise

When it comes to high-end residential cinema design, limited room dimensions should never dictate a compromise on performance. A world-class private theater is not created simply by purchasing premium hardware — it is achieved through the precise engineering of the room’s invisible foundations: structural isolation, acoustic modal control, room correction, and meticulous AV calibration.

Recently, the team at AV Consultants, led by founder Deepak Saxena, completed a comprehensive raw-room-to-finished-cinema transformation for Mr. Dinesh at his residence in Sector 37 Chandigarh.

With more than 17 years of experience in the premium audio-video industry, Deepak Saxena has built a reputation as one of the region’s most trusted home cinema problem solvers — known for transforming acoustically challenging spaces into reference-grade entertainment environments.

This engineering-first approach allows AV Consultants to consistently deliver immersive cinematic performance even in compact or acoustically difficult spaces.

Deepak Saxena: A Home Cinema Problem Solver with a Unique Engineering Vision

Founder Deepak Saxena is widely recognized for his practical problem-solving approach and deep understanding of real-world AV integration challenges.

Rather than relying on generic package-based solutions, his methodology focuses on:

  • Solving acoustic limitations at the structural level
  • Controlling room resonances before calibration
  • Designing invisible speaker integration
  • Maximizing performance within client budgets
  • Creating cinema spaces that balance luxury aesthetics with technical precision

His unique strength lies in combining:

  • Acoustic science
  • AV system engineering
  • Interior design coordination
  • Real-world installation experience
  • Advanced calibration techniques

This allows AV Consultants to engineer cinema rooms that not only sound exceptional but also feel architecturally refined and visually immersive.

The Core Challenge: Small-Room Acoustics & Geometry

Designing a premium theater within a 15 ft (L) x 9 ft (W) x 10 ft (H) footprint introduces severe acoustic hurdles:

  • Aggressive Lateral Reflections: Narrow 9-foot widths cause early side-wall reflections to collide with the primary listening position, destroying dialogue clarity and soundstage imaging.
  • Severe Glass Reflections & Light Leakage: The rear of the space featured a large sliding glass balcony door—a highly reflective surface prone to structural rattling under low-frequency load, as well as a major source of ambient light pollution.
  • Low-Frequency Modal Resonance: Small, enclosed spaces naturally trap bass frequencies, creating severe peaks (boomy bass) and nulls (dead zones) across the seating area.

Instead of treating these issues with superficial cosmetics, our design prioritized an engineering-first philosophy. We re-engineered the room itself to act as the perfect extension of the loudspeaker system.

Phase 1: Structural Engineering & Acoustic Architecture

1. Multi-Layer Wall Treatment & Reflection Control

The room was completely stripped down to its bare shell. To control early reflections and eliminate flutter echoes without over-deadening the high frequencies, we deployed a custom wall framing system:

  • Sub-Layer: 9mm high-density compressed polyester foam sheets to handle broad-spectrum absorption.
  • Finish Layer: Premium, acoustically transparent fabric wrapping stretched seamlessly across architectural tracking.
  • Result: Pristine vocal intelligibility and a controlled decay rate ($RT_{60}$) that prevents listening fatigue during long cinematic sessions.

2. Acoustic Sealing of the Rear Glass Assembly

To transform the rear sliding door from a liability into an asset, the entire glass section was acoustically sealed, damped against mechanical resonance, and treated with complete blackout materials. This single intervention stabilized the room’s rear acoustic reflection profile and allowed the projection system to achieve absolute black levels.

3. Perforated Ceiling Grid & Dense Flooring

  • The Ceiling: We suspended a 15mm black perforated acoustic tile ceiling on an isolated grid structure. This handles vertical standing waves and controls the high dispersion angles of the overhead Dolby Atmos channels.
  • The Floor: A plush, ultra-dense 16mm carpet was laid wall-to-wall, anchoring the room’s low-end response and eliminating floor-bound slap echoes.

Phase 2: Component Integration & System Blueprint

Every component was meticulously specified to match the room’s volume, focusing on wide dispersion characteristics, high dynamic headroom, and architectural invisibility.

Phase 3: Signal Integrity & Clean Power Infrastructure

To safeguard the equipment and maintain a zero-loss signal path, we implemented a dedicated power and cabling backbone:

  • High-Bandwidth AV Paths: AudioQuest 10-Meter 4K HDMI Cables (18Gbps) link the equipment console to the projector, completely eliminating jitter and digital dropouts. Subwoofers are linked via heavily shielded AudioQuest 3-Meter subwoofer interconnects to suppress low-frequency EM hum.
  • Power Conditioning & Filtration: The system is fed through a TAGA Harmony DC1000 Surge Protector & Power Conditioner. By filtering out electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency (RF) noise from the local grid, we drastically lowered the system’s noise floor.
  • Projector Thermal Protection: An APC BX1100-VA UPS was dedicated solely to the BenQ projector, ensuring that if a sudden power cut occurs, the projector’s internal cooling fans continue running to protect the LED optical engine.

Invisible Integration & Spatial Design

A major hallmark of this project is its clean, modern architectural execution. The front soundstage completely disappears from view: the KEF THX LCR speakers and electronics are completely concealed within a custom-engineered wooden equipment console built directly beneath the screen.

The front wall was treated with a deep matte black finish, causing the Elite Screens 110-inch display to take center stage with zero visual distractions.

Seating & Viewing Geometry

For luxury comfort, we integrated three custom motorized recliners upholstered in dark plush fabric. Their placement was determined using precision calculations:

  • Optimized Ear-Height Alignment with the KEF Uni-Q acoustic centers.
  • Acoustic Null-Point Placement to keep the listeners out of native bass null zones.
  • Linear Wall-Mounted Architectural LED Profiles provide low-intensity illumination that enhances the room’s depth without throwing glare onto the projection screen.

The Verdict

The transformation of Mr. Dinesh’s residence in Sector 37, Chandigarh, proves that a restricted room footprint is not a barrier to achieving reference-level performance.

By prioritizing structural acoustics and implementing a strategic dual-subwoofer configuration to tame room modes, the resulting audio performance is incredibly tight, punchy, and expansive. The soundstage feels dramatically larger than the physical boundaries of the room, while the BenQ 4K LED projection engine delivers pristine, high-contrast imagery.

This project is a prime example of performance-first home theater craftsmanship engineered by AV Consultants.
