A Home Cinema Designed Around the Room

The room measured 21 × 14 feet and included two windows and two doors. These architectural features can create challenges for both acoustics and speaker placement.

Rather than treating the room as an empty box and simply installing equipment, AV Consultants approached the project from a room-design perspective. Speaker locations, listening positions, acoustic treatment, screen placement and equipment integration were considered together.

Acoustic Treatment: The Foundation of Better Sound

One of the most important elements of this installation was the acoustic treatment of the walls and doors.

A home cinema with untreated parallel walls and hard surfaces can experience unwanted reflections, flutter echoes and uneven bass response. Windows and doors can introduce additional acoustic challenges. The project therefore required careful treatment of the room rather than relying solely on the performance of the speakers.

AV Consultants implemented precision acoustic treatment at important reflection areas, along with treatment and sealing around the doors. Strategic acoustic treatment helps control unwanted reflections and contributes to improved dialogue clarity, imaging and overall balance.

7.2.2 Dolby Atmos Speaker System

At the heart of the installation is a 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos configuration, powered by a Denon AVR-X3800H.

The speaker system was carefully selected to create a coherent front soundstage, enveloping surround field and overhead Dolby Atmos layer.

Front Left and Right – Jamo S27F

The front soundstage uses Jamo S27F floor-standing tower speakers for the left and right channels.

These speakers establish the main stereo and cinematic soundstage, delivering scale and dynamics for movies and music.

Centre Channel – Jamo S43C

The Jamo S43C centre speaker handles the critical centre-channel duties.

Dialogue is one of the most important elements of any movie soundtrack. Proper centre-speaker positioning helps ensure that voices remain clear and anchored to the screen, whether the scene is a quiet conversation or a high-energy action sequence.

Surround Channels – Jamo S17B

For the surround channels, Jamo S17B bookshelf speakers were mounted using Gravity wall-mount stands.

The wall-mounted installation provides a clean appearance while allowing the speakers to be positioned appropriately around the seating area.

Rear Surround – Jamo E4

The rear surround channels use Jamo E4 speakers, helping extend the surround field behind the audience.

Together, the side and rear surround speakers create a more enveloping soundstage and allow movie effects to move naturally around the listening area.

Dolby Atmos Height – Jamo 608C

The overhead channels use Jamo 608C ceiling speakers.

These speakers add the vertical dimension that makes Dolby Atmos different from conventional surround sound. Effects such as aircraft, rain, helicopters and atmospheric sounds can be reproduced from above, creating a more three-dimensional listening experience.

Dual Definitive Technology DN10 Subwoofers

For low-frequency performance, AV Consultants installed two Definitive Technology DN10 subwoofers.

Using two subwoofers in a dedicated home cinema can help produce more consistent bass throughout the seating area than relying on a single subwoofer. Careful positioning and calibration are important because room acoustics strongly influence low-frequency performance.

The dual-subwoofer arrangement gives the system the foundation required for action movies, cinematic effects and music while supporting better integration with the main speaker system.

BenQ TK710 and 135-Inch ES Screen

The visual system is built around a BenQ TK710 projector paired with a 135-inch HD Matt White screen from ES Screen.

The large 135-inch screen provides the scale expected from a dedicated private cinema while being appropriate for the room’s dimensions and seating arrangement.

Screen size cannot be considered independently from viewing distance, projector placement and room geometry. AV Consultants therefore considered the complete visual chain when planning the installation.

Denon AVR-X3800H: The Control Centre

The Denon AVR-X3800H forms the central processing and amplification platform for the cinema.

It connects and manages the various components of the system while supporting the 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos configuration.

However, premium equipment alone does not guarantee premium performance. Speaker distances, levels, crossover settings, subwoofer integration and room correction all need to be properly configured.
